Crime noir film aesthetic research

February 16th 2021  I did research on crime noir movies to have inspiration for our movie. There are several codes and conventions of film noir. I've found some of the most recurrent codes and conventions. The Anti-hero protagonist: Most of these movies have protagonist that dwell in the middle of the dark and light side. This main characters are not the typical heroes that do everything right and are always ethically correct. They're flawed and cynical men that are not completely good and have tragic pasts. The Femme Fatale: This characters are strong and independent women who exploit their feminine side for their own interests. They're often lethal and don't care about anyone except their selves and sometimes their children. Quick, witty and quotable dialogue: Film noir has a different type of dialogue than the majority of film generes, it consists of quick and cool lines that make the characters seem tough and memorable by the audience.  High-contrast mise-en-scène:...

Analysis of final movie

April 3rd 2021 Now that we've finished our movie I'll do an analysis about the film techniques. The film starts with an establishing shot that pans over a city at night, it's also very important to acknowledge that the movie is in black and white. (This is a very important convention of film noir) The next shot that lasts about a second is a close up of someone tying their shoes. This shot is used to show to the audience that this scene and the next one are happening at the same time.  Then we see a high angle tracking shot that follows the car driving through the street in what seems to be a good neighborhood of the city. At the same time that this shot starts, the main character's voice over and the opening credits start too.  After this we see a close up of the headlights of the detective's car and then there is a static mid shot of the detective turning off and getting out of his car. After he gets out of the car there is another mid shot of him closing the doo...

Final Movie

March 20th 2021  This is the final version of our movie.

Script Movie

March 18th 2021 This is the final script for our movie. Jaeger I love this city; it may seem as this dark chaotic and hopeless place. But I like to think that there is light in between all. I don’t believe that I’m the good guy, I just try to do my job. I prefer not to see the world in black and white, I’d rather see it with shades of gray. But there is something that makes me change my mind.  It’s him. I’ve had enough of it. It’s always the same methods, the same kind of people. He always targets men, never women or children, and they are all killed by a quick stab to the heart, always with surgical precision.  It’s been around two years and there’s still nothing about him. He’s a complete ghost. Goes by the name of jaeger.  He… or she, you never know. Must receive help from someone, it is impossible that a single person can get away with all this. Well, whatever the case is, since I picked up this investigation, I feel like I’m always being watched.   I’...

Foley Sound

March 18th 2021 I researched about what foley sound is and how to properly use it on our film. I read an article about this that answers my question and also gives me tips on how to to use this type of sounds. 1  Foley sound is a specific technique used for sound design in films or television shows that creates everyday sounds. This sounds are created by artists in recording studios after the movie is recorded, they are in synchrony with the picture, to enhance the quality of the audio. These artists need to watch the whole film before making this sounds. There are two types of foley sound: Diegetic and nondiegetic sound. Diegetic sound consists of all the sounds that exist inside the movie's world, this consists of the voices of people, music that characters can hear and any sounds that happen inside this world. Nondiegetic sound consists of all the sounds that are added on top of the movie, this sounds cannot be heard by any character and some examples are: Narrations and s...

Film noir soundtrack planning

March 1st 2021 I've been doing research about the soundtrack used on film noir. I came up with lots of stuff that I plan on using. From what I've leant, this type of soundtracks use lots of half diminished 7 chords, Maj7 chords and dominant 5th chords in minor keys. Also, they use strangely chosen bass notes to create a feeling of uncertainty. I'm planning on using the Dorian mode to write this soundtrack, this mode creates a dark atmosphere and it is also not as gloomy and sad as other modes. (In case you don't know what musical modes are, I'll leave a link for you to understand). The most common instruments that are used on this type of movies are often saxophones,  pianos and upright basses. In this case I only have a piano, so I'll try to use plugins in order to change the sound of it into a saxophone. The music used in film noir is heavily inspired on dark jazz, I'll continue looking stuff about it to create this soundtrack. https://www.classicfm.com/d...

Film noir style infographic

February 21th 2021    Today I analyzed the aesthetic and style of film noir. I found this amazing infographic that contains most information about this topic. This information helped me a lot to understand all the style elements that make a film noir. Our objective is to make a film noir but also challenge its conventions. We want to set our movie in the modern day and we also want it to be in black and white.
