I did research on crime noir movies to have inspiration for our movie. There are several codes and conventions of film noir. I've found some of the most recurrent codes and conventions.
- The Anti-hero protagonist: Most of these movies have protagonist that dwell in the middle of the dark and light side. This main characters are not the typical heroes that do everything right and are always ethically correct. They're flawed and cynical men that are not completely good and have tragic pasts.
- The Femme Fatale: This characters are strong and independent women who exploit their feminine side for their own interests. They're often lethal and don't care about anyone except their selves and sometimes their children.
- Quick, witty and quotable dialogue: Film noir has a different type of dialogue than the majority of film generes, it consists of quick and cool lines that make the characters seem tough and memorable by the audience.
- High-contrast mise-en-scène: Film noir translates literally to black film in French. Though darkly themed narratives spawned the namesake, many noir films are notably high contrast and shot on black-and-white film. The genre’s aesthetic influences include German expressionism, it has asymmetrical tendencies and its use of light and shadow can be seen throughout film noir. This creates a contrast on the mise-en-scène. The mysterious silhouettes, the off-kilter camera angles and direct front-side lightning are all perfect examples of this.
All this codes and conventions sure will be helpful for us when doing the movie.
